‘A lot of progress’ against racism in game – LaLiga president

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has advised ESPN “a lot of progress” has been made relating to racism in Spanish soccer, however he does concede there’s a lot of work nonetheless to be performed to eradicate it.

Asked whether or not Spain is a racist nation, Tebas advised ESPN: “No, absolutely not.

“But I’m involved with any racist challenge and in truth we’re having an excellent marketing campaign against racism. But a lot of progress has been made in these years.

“There are no longer chants in a stadium. Almost everyone that attended [in the past] yelled in a derogatory way at each other, Black or f —-t, throughout the stadium.

“And we’ve got eradicated that. That existed 10 or 12 years in the past. Now there are way more remoted [cases].

“I believe that these events that have occurred somewhat in succession are not going to be a continuous issue in every game, far from it, as they have not been.”

However, the incidents proceed to occur, with the newest coming simply a number of days after Spain performed Brazil on the Bernabéu stadium in a game organised to lift consciousness of racism.

Tebas said the racist abuse suffered by Vinícius at the Mestalla stadium during a league game at Valencia in May 2023 was a turning point.

Vinícius has said “racism is regular in LaLiga.”

“What we have been doing was not sufficient,” Tebas said.

“We needed to do extra. We needed to work way more, not solely in prevention, in detection, in complaints and in the powers that we demand in order to take measures… We have reported many hate crimes earlier than Vinícius, with Vinícius, and afterwards we are going to do the identical.”

LaLiga has reported numerous racist incidents to the Spanish courts, but many of those cases have been dismissed.
